Our Welsh adventure - Day One

We ended up leaving Banbury on Friday 25th at about 2:30 pm in the afternoon, which was a bit behind schedule. We took the M6 toll road to escape most of the bad motorway traffic around Birmingham, but we still struck heavy 'Bank Holiday' traffic around Shrewsbury and Oswestry. Once we turned left onto the A5 towards Llangollen, then our holiday really started. We had exchanged busy motorway traffic for a beautiful winding mountain road which was carved into the side of the River Dee Valley. The road was very reminiscent of driving through the Alps, except the mountains were shorter. The road itself was fantastic, a cross between the Great Ocean Road and The Black Spur (two favourite roads in Victoria).

As we arrived at Llangollen at about 6:00 pm, we decided to have dinner there. It is a beautiful town perched across the River Dee.

We decided to have dinner at The Corn Mill. A quick view of their menu was enough to tempt us. And despite the fact that they had a no stroller/high chair policy (due to lots of stairs on the premises), Lucas is now old enough to have a booster seat.

I had monkfish wrapped in bacon with broadbeans and a creamy sauce. Nat had duck cassoulet. Both dishes were absolutely superb and under 10 pounds...unbelievable! We've had takeaway pizzas in London for more which were rubbish. It was without doubt the best meal we've ever had in England... although it was actually in Wales, so we should amend that to say that it was the best meal we've ever since we left Australia.

Lucas enjoyed the surroundings as well!

From Llangollen, we continued along the historic and breathtaking A5, before turning right onto the A470 at Betws-y-Coed and heading up to Conwy. We arrived at Conwy at about 8:40 pm, just in time to see the sun setting over Conwy castle, a rather breataking sight. We checked into the YHA hostel (situated atop a hill overlooking Conwy) and eventually managed to put Lucas to bed at about 9:30 pm. He had woken up when we got him out of the car and he was very excited to be sleeping in a new place.

That excitement naturally carried over to about 3 am the next morning when he woke up, and not recognising where he was, began to scream his head off.
